Help guide · Getting a trace

When the trace looks wrong

If the trace jumps, wanders or cuts a corner, one of these is usually the reason.

  • Glare. Bright sky behind the rod tip makes it hard to follow. Turn so the sun is behind the phone, or use reflective tip tape.
  • A busy background. Other people, traffic or moving branches behind the tip can pull the trace off. Film against trees, a hedge or grass.
  • The rod left the frame. If the tip goes out of the picture on the back cast, the trace has nothing to follow. Move the phone back or rotate it for a wider view.
  • The wrong rod hand. Check You › Rod hand. The app usually corrects it, but a clip with two people in it can confuse it.
  • Filmed from the front. The tip path only makes sense side-on.

To fix one cast without filming again, open it, tap More (the three dots) and choose Tap the rod tip, then tap the tip again on the three frames.

The trace follows the tip you tapped, and the app tells you when it’s unsure: dashed stretches were filled in between taps.
