Wide loop
The line rolls out in a big, open loop that catches the wind and costs you distance. The rod tip went round a curve instead of along a straight line.
Back castPauseForward cast
Wide loop
The tip travelled in a curve, so the line followed a curve.
- Try this
- Shorter stroke, straighter path, stop sooner.
What it looks like on the trace
The tip path bows above the straight line between the start and the stop of the stroke, like a dome. The app draws the straight line as a dashed chord and highlights the dome.
Likely causes
- An arc too wide for the length of line you are carrying.
- Rotating the rod through the stroke instead of moving it along a line.
- A soft stop, or letting the rod drift down after the stop.
- A wrist that opens at the end of the back cast.
One thing to try
Shorter stroke, straighter path, stop sooner.
A drill for it
The stop drill: short casts with an exaggerated stop. Shorten the stroke until the dome on the trace flattens. Drills
How Tight Loop spots it
It measures how far the tip rises above the chord, as a share of the stroke’s length, on the back cast and the forward cast separately.
